The old landline network, called the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), is being shut down by phone companies. This will happen by the end of January 2027. This means all landlines – and any equipment that uses the old network – will need to be upgraded to new digital services.
What’s changing?
Back in 2017, phone companies announced they would stop using the old analogue landline network (the PSTN). Instead, landlines will now work using the internet through digital services such as VoIP, Digital Voice, or All‑IP phone systems. You don’t need to have your own home internet connection for this—your phone provider will ensure the service still works for you.
It’s not just landlines that are affected. Any device that relies on the old network will also need to be updated. This includes things like:
- alarm systems
- telecare devices
- door entry systems
- and other similar equipment
Although the upgrade is being led by the telecoms industry, the government is working with providers to help make sure businesses, public services, and households are supported through the change.
When is it happening?
The switch to digital is happening gradually across the UK. Everything that still uses the old PSTN system – including every landline – must be fully upgraded by 31st January 2027.
Your phone providers may have already been in contact with you. Please get in touch with them if you have any questions.
At Hedyn we have been planning for this change and are liaising with residents who have lifeline alarm systems that were provided by us.
