The boiler is an important part of your home for providing you with heating and/or hot water. It’s helpful to know how it works, so you can make sure it’s in good working order.
Boiler basics
On the front of your boiler are two thermostats for heating and hot water. There is also a pressure gauge. The left thermostat is for the radiators in your home. It controls the temperature of the water that circulates in your radiators. It ranges from around 25 degrees to 80 degrees.
We recommend setting this at around 60 – 65 degrees. This will keep your home comfortably warm. It’s also good for keeping your energy bills at a reasonable cost.
The right thermostat controls the temperature of your hot water. This ranges from 35 degrees to 60 degrees. We recommend 58 degrees. This will keep the water at a good temperature, and you can add cold water as needed.
Finally, the pressure gauge tells you how much pressure is in the heating and hot water system. Measured by ‘bars’, this pressure gauge should read between 1 – 1.5 bar. If there’s less than 1 bar, you will need to top up your boiler pressure. If it reads above 1.5 bar, you can bleed your radiators to reduce the pressure.
